Ancient Chinese brewed beer 5,000 years ago: Researchers say


Persons in ancient China may have started enjoying the delights of beer seeing back to 5, 500 years ago, showed archaeological evidence released Monday by Chinese and US research workers.

So far, the original written record of dark beer in China appears in oracle bone inscriptions from the late Shang Empire about 3, 000 years ago, which showed old Chinese used malted source such as millets, barley and wheat as the key brewing ingredients.


Oriental and US researchers said ancient Chinese brewed ale 5, 000 years back.

Some studies, however, hypothesized that the Shang traditions of beer brewing has its origin in the Neolithic Yangshao period going out with 5, 000 to six, 000 years ago, when large-scale agricultural villages were established in the Orange River valley.

In the new study, researchers excavated two subterranean pits was involved with to around 3, 500 to 2, 900 BC at Mijiaya, an archaeological site near a tributary of the Wei Riv in northern China.

3 types of vessels were recovered in both starts: wide-mouth pots, funnels, and jiandiping amphorae, all of which have yellowish elements on their interior surface.
